Azithromycin Drug Interactions

Carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Epitol, Tegretol, Tegretol-XR, Equetro)
If you are taking both azithromycin and carbamazepine, your body may metabolize carbamazepine differently than intended and significantly increase the level of the drug in your system. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress and adjust your dose accordingly. This interaction has not been demonstrated with azithromycin specifically but has been reported with other similar antibiotics.

Nelfinavir (Viracept)
If you are taking azithromycin together with nelfinavir, your body may metabolize azithromycin differently than intended and significantly increase the amount of azithromycin in your system. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress, although dosage adjustments are not usually necessary.

Quinine
In general, quinine should not be combined with azithromycin, as dangerously high levels of quinine in the blood may result.
