Sulfamethoxazole Trimethoprim Information
Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim is a combination antibiotic that is sold under the brand names Bactrim®, Bactrim® DS, Septra®, Septra® DS, and Sulfatrim®. This product contains two antibiotics that work together to treat a number of bacterial infections, including:
- Ear infections
- Shigellosis (a form of dysentery)
- Traveler's diarrhea
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs), such as bladder infections.
The medication comes in tablet or oral suspension (liquid) form. It is typically taken twice a day. Information your healthcare provider needs when prescribing sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim includes a list of all other medicines you are taking, including nonprescription drugs and supplements, and any other medical conditions you have. In particular, let your healthcare provider know if you have kidney disease, porphyria, or HIV.
