Bactroban Ointment

Bactroban® (mupirocin) is a prescription drug used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. There are three different forms of Bactroban: an ointment that is applied to the skin, a cream that is applied to the skin, and an ointment that is applied inside the nose. The exact form your healthcare provider recommends depends on what the medication is being used for.

For example, when using the nasal ointment form of Bactroban to treat or prevent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a small amount of the medication is applied in each nostril twice a day for five days. Then, the nostrils should be repeatedly pinched tightly and released for one minute. This ensures that the product is distributed throughout the nasal passages.
