Drug Interactions With Cefdinir

When certain medications are taken together, there is a risk of developing negative drug interactions. With cefdinir, medicines such as probenecid, antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, and iron supplements can cause the body to metabolize the drugs differently than intended. Usually, these interactions result in increased or decreased levels of cefdinir in the system. If drug interactions with cefdinir are a concern, your healthcare provider may adjust your dosages.

Drug Interactions With Cefdinir: An Introduction

Cefdinir (Omnicef®) has a limited number of medicines that it is known to interact with. Drug interactions with cefdinir can include but are not limited to:
 
  • Probenecid (Benemid®, Probalan®)
  • Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, such as Maalox®, Mylanta®, Riopan®, Gelusil®, Rolaids®, ALternaGEL®, Amphojel®, and others
  • Iron supplements (including multivitamins) or foods high in iron.
     

Interactions With Cefdinir Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when cefdinir is taken with any of the medications listed above.
 
Probenecid
If you are taking cefdinir and probenecid, your body may metabolize the drugs differently than intended. This can significantly increase the amount of cefdinir in your system. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress more closely and adjust your dosage accordingly.
 
Aluminum or Magnesium Antacids
When cefdinir and antacids made with aluminum or magnesium are combined, less cefdinir may be absorbed into your body. To avoid this interaction, take the antacids at least two hours before or two hours after taking the cefdinir.
