Cefprozil Dosage

Your healthcare provider will determine an appropriate cefprozil dosage based on the type of infection you have, how serious it is, and various other factors. This prescription antibiotic comes as a tablet or an oral suspension (liquid), and is usually taken once or twice a day. Do not stop taking this medicine too soon, as it may lead to a more serious infection.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Cefprozil

The dose of cefprozil (Cefzil®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on factors such as:

  • Your age
  • Your weight
  • The type and severity of the infection being treated
  • How well your kidneys are functioning
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Recommended Cefprozil Dosing Guidelines for Adults

The standard dosage of cefprozil for treating various infections is usually as follows:

  • For pharyngitis ("strep throat") or tonsillitis in adults -- 500 mg every 24 hours for 10 days
  • For sinus infections --  250 mg or 500 mg for 10 days
  • For bronchitis -- 500 mg every 12 hours for 10 days
  • For skin and skin structure infections -- 250 mg every 12 hours or 500 mg every 12 or 24 hours for 10 days.

If your kidneys are not functioning well, your healthcare provider may recommend a lower cefprozil dose.

What Is the Recommended Cefprozil Dosage for Children?

The standard recommended cefprozil dosage for children will vary, depending mostly on the child's weight and the type of infection. In general, the standard amount is 7.5 mg to 15 mg per kg (about 3.4 mg to 6.8 mg per lb) twice a day or 20 mg per kg (about 9.1 mg per lb) once daily for 10 days.

Cefprozil liquid comes in two different strengths: 125 mg per 5 mL and 250 mg per 5 mL. After it is mixed, you should keep it in the refrigerator and discard any unused portion after 14 days.

If your kidneys are not functioning well, your healthcare provider may recommend a lower dose of cefprozil.
