Drug Interactions With Cefprozil
Before you take cefprozil, talk to your healthcare provider about all other medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking. Drug interactions are possible with cefprozil, particularly when this antibiotic is taken with probenecid, the oral typhoid vaccine, or certain other antibiotics. Some of these combinations may increase your risk for side effects or other complications.
Cefprozil (Cefzil®) may react with a few other products. Some of the drugs that can interact with cefprozil include but are not limited to:
- Aminoglycoside antibiotics, such as:
- Amikacin (Amikin®)
- Kanamycin (Kantrex®)
- Neomycin (Neo-Fradin®)
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when cefprozil is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Combining cefprozil with an aminoglycoside antibiotic may increase the risk of kidney damage. Nonetheless, in some very serious situations, such combinations may be used when the possible benefits outweigh the likely risks.
Birth Control Pills
Despite the long-standing belief that antibiotics interact with birth control pills, several studies have shown that most antibiotics do not increase the risk of pregnancy in women taking birth control pills. Nevertheless, there have been reports of birth control pill failure in women who have taken antibiotics.
Ask your healthcare provider about whether you need to use a backup method of birth control while taking cefprozil (see Antibiotics and Birth Control Pills for more information). If it is very important to you to avoid pregnancy, you might consider using a backup method just to be safe.
Oral Typhoid Vaccine
Like other antibiotics, cefprozil may decrease the effectiveness of the oral typhoid vaccine. If you have received cefprozil recently, or are currently using this medication, your oral typhoid vaccine may need to be postponed for at least a day after receiving it.
Probenecid can decrease the body's ability to remove cefprozil from the blood, potentially leading to high cefprozil blood levels. Talk with your healthcare provider before using these medications together.
