Ceftriaxone Uses

The two most common ceftriaxone uses are treating bacterial infections and preventing infection during surgery. Ceftriaxone is commonly used to treat things like skin infections, bone infections (osteomyelitis), and middle ear infections (otitis media). Ceftriaxone is not effective against viral infections. Off-label ceftriaxone uses include treating Lyme disease, epididymitis, and shigellosis.

Ceftriaxone (Rocephin^®) is a prescription antibiotic licensed to treat a number of infections. Some of these ceftriaxone uses include:

Treatment of bacterial infections
Prevention of infections during surgery.

Bacterial Infections

Ceftriaxone is most commonly used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Some of these infections may include:

Respiratory tract infection, such as pneumonia
Bone infection (osteomyelitis)
Joint infection (septic arthritis)
Middle ear infection (otitis media)
Meningitis
Irritation of the prostate (prostatitis)
Urinary tract infection (UTI)
Skin infection, such as cellulitis
Bacterial blood poisoning (septicemia)
Heart valve infection (endocarditis)
Gonorrhea
Syphilis
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Necrotizing fasciitis (more commonly known as "flesh-eating bacteria")
Toxic shock
Typhoid fever.

Ceftriaxone may be used to treat a number of other bacterial infections. It may be substituted in place of penicillin to treat common infections in people who are allergic to penicillin. It should be noted that there is a small chance that people who are allergic to penicillin will also be allergic to ceftriaxone or other cephalosporins.

Ceftriaxone is not effective against any infection caused by a virus, such as the flu, stomach flu, or common cold.
