Cholera Treatment: Fluid Replacement
In most cases,
cholera can simply and successfully be treated by immediate replacement of the fluids and salts that are lost through
diarrhea. Fluid replacement treatment for cholera usually involves an oral rehydration solution, which is a prepackaged mixture of salts and sugars, to be mixed with water and drunk in large amounts. This solution is used throughout the world to treat diarrhea. In severe cases,
cholera treatment may also require intravenous (IV) fluid replacement.
A cholera cure is possible in greater than 99 percent of cases, if treatment is started in a timely manner and in adequate volumes. Without proper treatment for cholera, a cure can be expected in about one half of cholera cases.
