Cipro for UTI
If you have a urinary tract infection (UTI), you may benefit from Cipro® (ciprofloxacin). This prescription medication belongs to a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, or "quinolones" for short.
As an antibiotic, Cipro works by killing certain bacteria that cause infections. It does this by interfering with two bacterial enzymes called topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase. Bacteria need these enzymes to copy and repair DNA, important steps required for the bacteria to multiply.
Cipro is approved for treating UTIs in adults. It is also approved to treat serious UTIs in children. However, Cipro is often not the first choice for treating infections in children because it may cause bone, joint, or tendon problems in this age group.
