Generic Cipro

There are generic Cipro products for the tablet and intravenous (IV) solution forms of the medication. However, patents currently prevent any generic version of the oral suspension from being made in the United States until at least July 2013, when the first patent expires. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has determined that the generic Cipro products currently available are equivalent to the brand-name drug.

Can I Buy a Generic Version of Cipro?

Cipro® (ciprofloxacin) is a prescription antibiotic medication used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It belongs to a group of medications called fluoroquinolones, or quinolones for short. It is available in tablet, oral liquid suspension, and intravenous (IV) solution forms.
 
Cipro is made by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It is distributed by Schering Plough Corporation. Currently, Cipro tablets and IV solution are available as generic products. However, Cipro oral suspension is protected by patents that prevent any generic versions from being sold in the United States.
