Clarithromycin (Biaxin®) is a medicine licensed for the treatment of certain types of infections. It works by decreasing the ability of bacteria to make protein, which causes the bacteria to stop growing and multiplying. The medication is available by prescription only and comes in the form of immediate-release tablets, extended-release tablets, and as an oral suspension. Although most people tolerate clarithromycin well, it is not suitable for everyone. Before taking this antibiotic, make sure your healthcare provider is aware of any other medical conditions you have, as well as any other medications you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements.
