Clarithromycin (Biaxin®) is a prescription medicine approved for treating infections caused by certain types of bacteria. It works to kill bacteria by decreasing their ability to make protein, which stops the bacteria from growing and multiplying. The antibiotic is usually taken once or twice a day, and comes in the form of immediate-release tablets, extended-release tablets, and as an oral suspension. Your healthcare provider will recommend your clarithromycin dosage based on your age and weight, the type of infection, and other medications you are taking, among other things.
