Clarithromycin (Biaxin®) is a prescription medicine licensed to treat infections caused by certain types of bacteria. By decreasing bacteria's ability to make protein, the medication helps stop bacteria from growing and multiplying. Clarithromycin comes in a wide variety of strengths and forms, including immediate-release tablets, extended-release tablets, and as an oral suspension. Before taking the drug, talk to your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements. Also, you may not be able to take clarithromycin safely if you have certain medical conditions, such as liver or kidney disease.
