Furadantin and Pregnancy

Taking Furadantin in Late Pregnancy

Women who might deliver soon should not take Furadantin. Generally, this includes women who are at least 38 weeks pregnant, although it might include women at earlier stages of pregnancy in certain situations. This drug should definitely not be used during labor or delivery.
The reason for this precaution is that the medication could increase the risk of hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells) in a newborn. It is for this same reason that newborns should never be given nitrofurantoin.

Final Thoughts

If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, let your healthcare provider know. Your healthcare provider will consider both the benefits and risks of taking Furadantin during pregnancy before making a recommendation in your particular situation.
