A liquid antibiotic, Furadantin is used to prevent and treat urinary tract infections in both children and adults. It works by destroying certain bacterial proteins and molecules. The medication can be taken by children who are at least one month old. When used in children younger than one month, it increases the risk for a dangerous condition involving the destruction of red blood cells.
What Is Furadantin Used For?Furadantin® (nitrofurantoin suspension) is a prescription antibiotic approved for the treatment and prevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Because it comes as a liquid, Furadantin is ideal for children or others who have difficulty swallowing capsules, since the other forms of nitrofurantoin come as capsules.
Specifically, Furadantin is used for treating and preventing bladder infections caused by the two most common types of UTI bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus saprophyticus) as well as a few other types of bacteria. It is not approved to treat kidney infections.
