Bacteria Home > Cefotetan Dosage
Your healthcare provider will determine an appropriate cefotetan dosage based on the type of infection you have, how serious it is, and a number of other factors. This prescription antibiotic comes as an injection that is given into a vein or a muscle. For serious infections, the drug is usually given intravenously; less-serious infections usually are treated with intramuscular injections.
An Introduction to Your Dosage of Cefotetan
The dose of cefotetan (Cefotan®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on factors such as:
- The type and severity of the infection being treated
- How well your kidneys are functioning
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Recommended Cefotetan Dosing Guidelines for Treating InfectionsAlthough the standard recommended dosage for cefotetan varies, the usual amount for adults typically ranges from 0.5 grams (500 mg) up to 3 grams (3000 mg) given every 12 to 24 hours, given either intravenously (by IV) or by injection into a muscle (IM injection).
What Is the Recommended Dose of Cefotetan for Preventing Surgical Infections?
For preventing surgical infections in adults, the standard dosage is a single dose of cefotetan 1 gram or 2 grams given by IV 30 to 60 minutes before the first incision. For cesarean sections, the dose is usually given right after the cord is clamped to prevent transfer of the drug to the baby.
