Rifampin is available by prescription only and is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Specifically, it is approved to treat tuberculosis and to get rid of bacteria known as Neisseria meningitides. This antibiotic comes in the form of capsules and an injection. Your individual dosage will depend on your weight, the reason you are taking the drug, and other factors.
- To treat tuberculosis, usually along with other tuberculosis medications.
- To get rid of Neisseria meningitides (the bacteria that causes meningococcal infections, such as meningitis) in people who have this bacteria in their nose and throat but do not have symptoms of a meningococcal infection.
- Loss of appetite
- A reddish color of the urine, sweat, saliva, and tears.
