Mefoxin Dosage

Your particular dosage of Mefoxin is based on your age, weight, and the type and severity of the infection, among other factors. It is given intravenously (by IV), usually three to six times a day. In general, the more serious the infection, the higher and more frequent the Mefoxin dose.

An Introduction to Dosing With Mefoxin

The dose of Mefoxin® (cefoxitin) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on factors such as:
  • Your age
  • Your weight
  • The type and severity of the infection being treated
  • How well your kidneys are functioning
  • Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

What Is the Recommended Mefoxin Dosage for Infections?

The recommended dosage of Mefoxin varies widely, depending on several factors; however, the usual dosage for adults typically ranges from 1 grams to 3 grams and is given every 4 to 8 hours. In general, the more serious the infection, the higher and more frequent the dosage.
For children, the amount is calculated based on the child's weight. Mefoxin is approved for use in children as young as three months old. Typical dosages in children range from 80 to 160 mg per kg (about 36 to 73 mg per lb) total per day, divided into four to six equal doses per day, with a maximum of 12 grams total per day.
If your kidneys are not functioning well, your healthcare provider may recommend a lower or less frequent dosage.

Mefoxin Dosing Guidelines for Preventing Surgical Infections

For preventing surgical infections in adults, the standard dosage is Mefoxin 2 grams given one-half to one hour before the first incision, followed by 2 grams every six hours for no more than 24 hours.
For a cesarean section (C-section), the standard dosage is Mefoxin 2 grams given immediately after the cord is clamped, which may or may not be followed by two additional 2-gram doses four and eight hours after the initial dose (both a one-dose and a three-dose regimen are recommended).
For children, the dosage will be based on the child's weight.
