Mefoxin Drug Interactions

Birth Control Pills
Despite the longstanding belief that antibiotics interact with birth control pills, several studies have shown that most antibiotics do not increase the risk of pregnancy in women taking birth control pills.
Nevertheless, there have been reports of birth control pill failure in women who have taken antibiotics. Ask your healthcare provider about whether you need to use a backup method of birth control while using Mefoxin (see Antibiotics and Birth Control Pills for more information). If it is important to you to avoid pregnancy, you might consider using a backup method of birth control just to be safe.
Oral Typhoid Vaccine
Like other antibiotics, Mefoxin may decrease the effectiveness of the oral typhoid vaccine. If you have received Mefoxin recently, or are currently using Mefoxin, your oral typhoid vaccine may need to be postponed for at least a day after receiving Mefoxin.
Probenecid can decrease the body's ability to remove Mefoxin from the blood, potentially leading to high Mefoxin blood levels. Talk with your healthcare provider before using these medications together.
There have been reports that cephalosporin antibiotics, including Mefoxin, can increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. If you are taking warfarin, very close monitoring will be necessary during Mefoxin treatment and for a while after treatment ends. Your warfarin dosage may need to be temporarily adjusted.
