Ofloxacin in Pregnancy

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has categorized ofloxacin as a pregnancy Category C medication, based on the results of animal studies. It belongs to a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones, or "quinolones" for short.

This particular antibiotic has not been studied in pregnant women specifically. However, certain studies have looked at the effects of oral fluoroquinolones during pregnancy and concluded that they do not appear to increase the risk for major birth defects. At this time, there still is not enough information to determine if ofloxacin is completely safe in pregnancy.
