An Overview of Uses for Ofloxacin
Ofloxacin is a prescription antibiotic. It belongs to a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones, or just "quinolones" for short. Ofloxacin is available as a tablet, an ear drop, and an eye drop.
The oral tablets are approved to treat the following infections:
The otic (ear) solution is approved to treat the following bacterial infections:
- Otitis externa, which is an infection of the ear canal or outer ear. This type of ear infection is sometimes called "swimmer's ear."
- Acute otitis media, commonly called a middle ear infection, in children with ear tubes.
- Chronic otitis media in people with holes in their tympanic membrane (eardrum).
The ophthalmic (eye) solution is approved to treat bacterial conjunctivitis and corneal ulcer infections.
Ofloxacin is used for treating infections only when they are caused by certain types of bacteria. Although the medicine is considered a "broad-spectrum" antibiotic, which means it is effective against many different bacteria types, not all bacteria will respond to it.
In addition, this medication will not cure infections caused by viruses, such as the
common cold,
the flu, or viral conjunctivitis.
