Drug Interactions With Rifampin

Certain complications may occur in people who take rifampin with products like tetracycline antibiotics, antacids, or birth control pills. Some of these drug interactions with rifampin may increase the risk for side effects or make the medications less effective. To help avoid these and other problems, let your healthcare provider know about all other medications, vitamins, or supplements you are taking.

 

An Overview of Rifampin Interactions

Rifampin (Rifadin®) is known for having the potential to interact with a number of other medications -- far too many to include in this article. Therefore, it is very important to tell your healthcare provider about all the other medicines you are taking. Examples of some of the medicines that may lead to rifampin drug interactions include but are not limited to:
 
  • Antacids (Alternagel®, Gaviscon®, Maalox®, Mylanta®, Tums®, and many others)
  • Antifungal medications, such as:
    • Fluconazole (Diflucan®)
    • Itraconazole (Sporanox®)
    • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
    • Posaconazole (Noxafil®)
    • Voriconazole (Vfend®)
 
  • Atovaquone (Mepron®)
  • Barbiturates, such as:
    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)
