As a type of antibiotic, rifampin (Rifadin®) is prescribed to treat certain types of bacteria. Specifically, this drug is used to treat tuberculosis. Rifampin can also help get rid of a certain type of bacteria called Neisseria meningitides (also referred to as meningococcus) from the nasopharynx (the nose and throat).
This medicine comes in the form of a capsule or an injection. Rifampin works by blocking the action of a certain enzyme that the bacteria need to be able to survive. Side effects are possible and include heartburn, headaches, and drowsiness.
