Rotavirus Incubation Period

An incubation period is the time between when a person becomes infected and when symptoms appear. For people infected with a rotavirus, the incubation period lasts approximately two days. During the rotavirus incubation period, a person is contagious and can pass the infection on to others.

When a person becomes infected with rotavirus, the virus begins to multiply within the small intestine. After approximately two days, symptoms of a rotavirus infection can appear. This period between the rotavirus transmission and the start of symptoms is the "rotavirus incubation period."

Yes, a person is contagious during the rotavirus incubation period. Infected people are also contagious while experiencing rotavirus symptoms. Once the diarrhea has ended, a person is no longer contagious.
