When to Seek Help

It is possible that a sore throat is strep or something more serious. People with throat pain should contact their healthcare provider if they have any of the following symptoms:
 
  • Temperature higher than 101ºF (38.3ºC)
  • Swelling in the neck or tongue
  • Difficulty breathing, swallowing, or opening the mouth
  • Drooling
  • Difficulty talking
  • Stiff neck.

Healthcare providers may refer to strep throat as acute streptococcal pharyngitis.
