What Should I Do If I Miss a Dose?

If you do not take your sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim as scheduled, take your missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose. Try not to miss doses, as this increases the risk of developing an antibiotic-resistant infection.

Who Makes Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim?

Bactrim and Bactrim DS are made by Mutual Pharmaceutical Company, Inc. and are marketed and distributed by AR Scientific. Septra and Septra DS are made by King Pharmaceuticals. Sulfatrim is made by Actavis US. Generic versions are made by various different manufacturers.


Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim comes in the following strengths and forms:
  • Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim tablets -- 400 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 80 mg of trimethoprim
  • Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim DS ("double strength") tablets -- 800 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 160 mg of trimethoprim.
  • Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim suspension -- 200 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 40 mg of trimethoprim per teaspoonful (per 5 mL).


Store sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Be sure to keep it in an airtight container. Keep this and all other medications out of the reach of children.
